Ok, maybe it’s olive oil, but it’s not Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Have you seen this study from The University of California – Davis? They tested the top producers/suppliers of olive oil in this country and guess what they found. What we think is extra virgin olive oil really isn’t. Blasphemy! And worse, some of it isn’t even olive oil! Yes, it says so on the label! But it isn’t. It’s been mixed with inferior oils. Also, as if that weren’t enough, much of what was tested was rancid or made from damaged or overripe olives. Whaaat!?
How do you feel about this statement? – “oils can be tainted, cut with other oils, deodorized and sold as extra virgin”
Don’t believe me? Look for yourself. And worse? I bet you have one of these in your kitchen!
Yes! That is Rachel Ray. And her EVOO was on the naughty list.
So how do you know if your oil is actually what it states on the label?
Here are the oils that topped the list of REAL Extra Virgin Olive Oil –
California Olive Ranch
McEvoy Ranch Organic
There is also a small test you can perform, if you are in to that kind of thing, like me.
Try this –
Place a small bowl of your oil in the refrigerator for 24-48 hours. If the oil crystallized it is extra virgin. If it is solid it is NOT extra virgin olive oil.
It’s really a shame we can’t trust what we read on a product label, but the truth is friends, we simply can’t. We have to educate ourselves. We have to be proactive and knowledgable about our choices.
So what, you ask?
Well, sure you can go ahead and continue using these oils. I mean, they ARE often cheap. I suppose we all should have known the truth by that fact alone. But, if you hate being lied to. If you want to experience the amazing flavor of REAL extra virgin olive oil, which should be flavorful and rich, go try one of these that made the “good” list. You may still decide on the rancid can of lies, but at least you will know the truth.
